Why Self Care Is So Important And How To Do It

We hear a lot more about self-care lately and how important it is. Today we’re going to talk about why it’s so important and I’ll give you some examples of ways you can practice it.  You might find out that’s it’s easier than you thought.

Even though it’s a subject that you hear about more and more, it still feels like it’s impossible to do a lot of the time.  Everyone is so busy with a million things going on, that often times, we either forget or don’t have the time to slow down and take care of ourselves.  

Even now with us being cooped at home because of the coronavirus, I’m hearing a lot of parents say it’s impossible for them to find time for themselves because their kids are at home and demand their constant attention. But it is one of the most important things you can do for yourself.  And it doesn’t have to take a lot of time!  

So first, here are 3 reasons why it’s so important.

Number 1.  It deduces stress.

Stress is one of those words that just gets thrown around like it’s no big deal because everyone has it and everyone deals with it but it’s actually really damaging to our bodies and our minds and needs to be taken seriously.  It causes a slew of illnesses and diseases and can actually break down our body and our mind.

Number 2.  It improves your focus and concentration.

When we’re stressed and running on overdrive we’re overstimulated and eventually, that affects the brain. When we practice self-care, it lets our minds settle down and relax. It’s kind of like hitting the reset button. You will be more alert, more focused, make better decisions, be better at problem-solving and be more relaxed.

Number 3.  It gives you more patience.

When we’re stressed out, let’s face it, our patience is almost always on the low side.  If you take some time to take care of yourself and regroup, you will have more patience with the people around you, your pets, if you got ‘em, and with tasks in general. Like when your computer doesn’t work.  Or a telemarketer calls.  

Here are some simple ways you can include self-care into your life right now:

  • Workout
  • Journal
  • Listen to upbeat or relaxing music
  • Take five minutes to sit down and put your feet up
  • Light a nice smelling candle
  • Stand in the shower with the hot water pouring over your back
  • Go for a walk
  • Take an Epsom salt bath
  • Schedule a date night with your spouse, partner, or friends to connect without distractions
  • Enjoy a hot cup of tea without doing anything else
  • Have a bath
  • Turn your phone off for 30 minutes
  • Do yoga
  • Meditate
  • Read a book for 20 minutes
  • Go to bed 15 minutes early
  • Take five minutes, breathe and just look outside

It doesn’t matter what it is, it’s more important that you do something that makes you calm down and that you enjoy. It can be as simple as taking five minutes but the benefits you will get from it will be life-changing.
